Cape Verde has a 3-6-3-3 formal education structure. There are three years of pre-primary school, which has an official entry age of three and is referred to as Educação Pré-escolar. Primary school, which is known as Ensino Básico, has an official entry age of six and a duration of six grades. The end of this cycle culminates in the Passagem para Sétimo Ano. Secondary school is divided into two cycles: lower secondary and upper secondary.
Lower secondary, which is divided into Ensino Básico and Ensino Secundário Primeiro Ciclo Primeiro Ano, consists of grades 7-9 and culminates in the Certificado do Ensino Básico after grade 8 and the Passagem ao Décimo Ano do Programa de Ensino Secundário Primeiro Ciclo after grade 9. Upper secondary, which is divided into Ensino Secundário Primeiro Ciclo Segundo Ano and Ensino Secundário Segundo Ciclo, consists of grades 10-12 and culminates in the Certificado de Habilitação Literária do Primeiro Ciclo after grade 10 and the Diploma do Ensino Secundário after grade 12. In addition, Cape Verde has an upper secondary vocational education track that lasts two years (ISCED 2011 mapping for 2013 school year).
